Literally cut/pasted from <lj user="scs_11"> in fulfillment of #7 below.

Fun Friendship Meme:

Respond and I'll...

1. Tell you why I friended you.
2. Associate you with something - fandom, a song, a color, a photo, etc.
3. Tell you something I like about you.
4. Tell you a memory I have of you.
5. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you.
6. Tell you my favorite user pic of yours.
7. In return, you must post this in your LJ
Actually, I won't come hunt you down if you don't do #7. You'll just have to wallow in the despair of your own failure. Tch, tch.

I would be interested in seeing what you come up with, with 1 through 6 in particular. Please let me know.

Ok, here goes:

1. What better way to catch up with geographically distant friends?

2. Filk, of course.

3. Your unequalled ability to make everyone and anyone welcome.

4. This is related to #3: You singing a song in Spanish at my first filk. I was *so* nervous, and only had 2 folk songs and one filk I wrote that day before I ran out of repertoire, so I sang a song in Spanish ("Cuando Sali de Cuba.") You commented on how glad you were that I was brave enough to do that, because it let you do the same. Bless you! If anyone had been about to make fun of me, you stymied them good and proper.

5. How did you get started in music, and how did you end up with guitar?

6. You don't use one!

OK, I'll take the bait...
6th-Dec-2007 06:14 pm (UTC)
1. To keep in touch with you, what else?

2. Filk, of course.

3. How instinctively kind you are. I don't think you operate in any other mode.

4. How proud you were when you and Lindy became engaged!

5. How did your technical career lead to teaching?

6. I've only seen this one, so I guess it's it.

I don't think my technical career led to teaching. Both my technical career and my teaching were results of my education. My master's is in astronomy and I ran out of money while working towards my PhD. At that time, my most marketable skills were related to programming computers. I was hired by a company that was looking for a FORTRAN programmer (they never asked if I'd used FORTRAN; I hadn't, but I was able to wing it).

When the dot-com world went bust and the company I was working for got bought by one that was doing online "adult content," I chose not to go with the new company. After all, I had never been unemployed for more than 2 weeks, so I figured it wouldn't take more than that to find a new job. I was wrong; I was not the only highly skilled technical manager looking for work! So I reevaluated my graduate school experience and identified another area where I could make something resembling a living. Unfortunately, teaching doesn't pay well enough to have allowed us to continue living in Oakland, so here we are in Wells, Nevada.

Tag, you're it!

1. Same litany: to keep in touch. But, in addition, you are the reason I joined LJ. I was appalled to find out about Katie some three months after she was born. How could I possibly have been so out of it? When I asked for details, you pointed me to Roper's LJ. I had never heard of it before then. Once here, I saw more friends. I'm still finding them, and adding them as I find them. So, how could I not friend you?

2. Roper, whom I associate with filk and husband, so there too are you.

3. Your creativity. It's so varied, which is admirable enough. I particularly like how comfortable you are with your domestic creativity. It's something you could easily assume would garner snide commentary - not deservedly, mind you, but just because times and people are what they are. But you make it look so natural, so necessary ... so *right.* I love visiting your home and seeing all the touches, new and old.

4. There's a scene I see in my mind's eye. Your mother was at the table; you and Bill had finished, but your mom hadn't eaten much at all. You were so patient, kind, loving as you coaxed her into eating. You even had her laughing. (And grabbed the chance to put in another spoonful, no fool you!) All that, but you didn't once rob her of her personal dignity. It's a great image.

5. Why didn't you pursue meteorology? How did you end up in banking, instead?

6. I've only seen this one, but I have to say it's a favorite picture of you.

Let's roll!

1. Because you tell such great stories. And, to keep in touch. It's not like we live across the street from one another, or something.

2. With my husband. Filk/fandom come in two flavors - general, and those associated with my husband.

3. Your ability to manage group dynamics. How I envy you!

4. You dancing with your daughter at our wedding. Though I haven't seen you with your granddaughter, yet, I imagine you look at her the same way you looked at your daughter then.

5. Why UoM? I know why advanced schooling, but not why you chose UoM. What were the roads not chosen, and your rationale for not choosing them?

6. I've only seen this one. But, I will admit, it's one of my favorite userpics of all time.

Why UoM?

To make a very long story short, in the course of one week I found myself without home, job, school, scholarship, and a number of equally vital things. At the end of that cycle I realized that for once I had absolutely no ties to living in California any more. I'd always wanted to move back to the midwest, and my friend Bob (we met as students at USC) had recently been telling me I should apply to UM and that I could live with him in Ypsilanti while getting settled. I called him up and asked if the offer was still open. He said yes and asked when I'd be arriving. "Three days," I said, and then made it true.

OK. I had heard the long story, but not the reason you went specifically to UoM.

I'm glad you did, of course.
